Medical MicroDermabrasion

What is Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is a technique to polish and smooth the skin.  It is totally different to the old style dermabrasion that had many side effects.

How does Microdermabrasion work?

Medical microdermabrasion uses an entirely different principle.  The machine is firstly a cleansing device using a principle similar to a vacuum cleaner to clean the skin and empty out the blocked pores with a gentle vacuuming action.

In the second phase of the treatment a fine jet of crystals is sprayed on the skin.  This has the effect of gently smoothing the skin surface and removing the outer layer of dead skin cells.

Is Microdermabrasion painful?

No.  The procedure is quite comfortable and can be done without any anaesthetic.  When the treatment is completed the skin has a healthy glow due to increased circulation in the skin.  This increased circulation brings with it oxygen and nutrients to refresh and regenerate the skin.

With repeated treatments this results in a smoothing of skin irregularities, and an improvement in the skin’s appearance.

What will my skin look like immediately after the treatment?

You will see an immediate visible result.  The dull and stressed looking skin will look brighter and more vibrant.  Mild redness can be covered with make-up and usually fades within 24 hours.  There is no problem with returning to work straight after your treatment.  There is no discomfort after the treatment.

What conditions can be treated with Microdermabrasion?

The main areas of use are in the treatment of fine lines and wrinkles, sun damage, acne, pigmentation and small scars. There are no specific contraindications to microdermabrasion except the recent use of the drug Roaccutane.

How many treatments are usually required?

It is usually necessary to have multiple treatments over a period of time. Most cases require about 6-8 treatments but severe acne and acne scars may require more. Treatments are usually done every 1-3 weeks. The treatments usually take about 30 minutes, depending on the area.

With conditions such as acne it may be necessary to combine microdermabrasion with other medical therapies, such as peels, and skin care programs to ensure more rapid results.
