LED Photo-Rejuvenation

What is LED photo-rejuvenation?

LED stands for Light Emitting Diode.  An LED generates a specific electromagnetic wave (one type of photon) when stimulated by an electrical current. The benefits of LED were discovered during research by NASA in the United States.

In recent years, specialised therapeutic LED lights have been used for skin treatments, such as rosacea, acne and to help stimulate production of collagen.

Unlike laser or IPL, LED photo-rejuvenation is non-invasive and therefore requires no recovery time after treatment. Whereas laser or IPL causes injury to the skin to induce a healing response and improvement in the skin, LED photo-rejuvenation improves skin by stimulating the skin cells’ metabolism without causing injury.

Treatments involve simply lying and relaxing under the LED light for 20 to 30 minutes. It is a safe and risk free procedure!

What is LED photo-rejuvenation used for?

We use LED photo-rejuvenation for a variety of skin conditions. Different colours and wavelengths of LED light are used to target various skin conditions from acne to ageing skin.

At The Melbourne Cosmetic Group, we utilise five LED wavelengths, namely RedBlueGreenYellow and Near Infrared. Each wavelength penetrates the skin to a different depth and therefore has a different effect within the skin and deeper tissues.

Red LED photo-rejuvenation:

Red light, at 640nm, is effective in healing (for example post-laser treatment), deep tissue healing, reduction of fine lines and wrinkles, and improvement of skin texture.

Red light LED photo-rejuvenation induces a mild inflammation of the skin cells and sets up an immune response that helps to activate and regenerate skin cells. This helps to rejuvenate and heal the skin.

Blue LED photo-rejuvenation:

Blue light, at 470nm, is effective in treating acne. Blue light LED photo-rejuvenation has an effect on the bacteria that is the root cause of acne; Propionibacterium acnes. This bacteria produces tiny molecules known as porphyrins.

When porphyrins are exposed to blue light, they produce free radicals that in turn kill the bacteria, thus stopping the cycle at its cause. Here at the Melbourne Cosmetic Group we use a combination Blue-Red LED photo-rejuvenation in the treatment of acne.  This combination has been shown to significantly improve inflammatory acne compared with just using blue light therapy by itself.  The blue light kills bacteria and the red light heals the inflammation and scarring.

This therapy for acne reduces the need for antibiotics and their associated side effects, and due to its unique mode of killing bacteria does not lead to the emergence of resistant bacteria. With that in mind, Blue – Red LED photo-rejuvenation make a great combination for treating acne!

Yellow LED photo-rejuvenation:

Yellow light, at 590nm, has similar effects to Red light LED photo-rejuvenation and is more suitable for Asian or darker skin.

Yellow light LED photo rejuvenation decreases inflammation by encouraging circulation and boosting the body’s own immune system, and increases hydration, leaving smoother looking skin.

Green LED photo-rejuvenation:

Green light, at 525nm, decreases the level of melanocyte activity in the skin making it useful in treating hyper pigmented skin. Green light has also been known to help stimulate the circulation in the skin, particularly the lymphatic system.

Green light acts to detoxify the skin by reducing irritation and sensitivity and is helpful for rosacea and irritated skin which has undergone non-ablative procedures such as hair removal and IPL.

Near Infrared LED photorejuvenation:

Near infrared light therapy uses invisible, near infrared wavelengths between 700 and 1200 nm to deliver energy to the cells, stimulating healing and relieving pain. Infrared light therapy has been proven effective by hundreds of studies all over the globe, is 100% natural and has no known adverse side effects.

Near infrared light therapy penetrates the body deeper than other LEDs, reaching deep into soft tissues, muscles, joints, and bone. near infrared light therapy has already been FDA approved and is available for the relief of chronic pain.

How many treatments are required?

For the treatment of acne, clinical trials, such as the one at http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17111415, have shown that one treatment twice a week for 4 weeks, followed by once a week for 8 weeks helps to reduce bacteria counts and inflammation associated with acne, and therefore reduces the number of active acne lesions.

When red LED light is used for facial rejuvenation, treatments can be done from 1 to 2 weeks apart, and the more treatments that are performed, the better the result. LED photo-rejuvenation can be incorporated into your skin’s maintenance regime.

The use of red LED photo-rejuvenation post-laser treatment to help to speed recovery requires a variable number of sessions, depending on the laser treatment performed.  For lighter laser treatments, one session of red light LED photo-rejuvenation may be required immediately after the laser is performed. For more intense laser treatments, daily treatments for several days post-treatment may be required.

How much does it cost?

We provide the service for $85 per session. Each session lasts about 20 to 30 minutes.

Discounts are available when pre-purchasing 8 or more treatments.
